In the latest ‘eco-friendly’ move by governments to reduce carbon emissions from various modes of transport, the cruising industry has been put under the microscope and asked to invest in more sustainable and cleaner ship developments in the coming years. Improved Ship Efficiency. Not only are ships now being made from more sustainable materials and but they are also being designed and constructed to more efficient specifications. Hull design has also been dramatically resigned by the same Irish ship building company, allowing the energy usually lost when the boat impacts waves to be turned into forward propulsion instead.
Hybrid Boats. A number of cars and trucks have been developed with hybrid fuel-battery engines now and have integrated very well with the more traditional vehicles. Now ship builders such as those making boats for Silversea Cruises are getting in on the action and making boats that couple the traditional diesel power with electrical power. Sharing Cargo. A great idea being trialled by Oceania Cruises is ‘cargo sharing’. If a cruise ship has not filled all its spaces, it can offer to carry commercial cargo for other companies sending things to the same place, for a small commission of course. A few extra bucks are earned by the cruise companies who would have otherwise wasted space, the company who are shipping the cargo massively save on costs and less pollution is released into the environment. it is hard to believe that I was once a security guard, when you consider that I spend 8 hours a day in front a computer screen. Although the job was only temporary whilst I tried to obtain more qualifications, it was meant for real situations and was a real job.
My main claim to fame was being an official security guard during the Party Political conference of the Labour Party in 2006. It was not enough for the Labour lot to need the police force to protect them, they also needed private force of security guard specialists to give extra help. Much of this thinking was in place as a result of the IRA bomb on the Grand Hotel in 1984. Obviously this caused massive damage inside the hotel, and almost wiped out the prime minister and most of her cabinet. The political scene may change, terrorists networks rise up and then dissolve, but some policies are set in stone until the next major event.
Security guards work together with the police force, who find it hard not to look down upon their ‘inferiors’ from the private sector. The irony is that many of the private security guards were once employed by the police force and know the structure well.
The day I had at the Party conference was one that will take some beating, and stay in my mind for ever. For some unknown reason I thought my duties would not be any more stressful than stopping people from dropping litter, or moving on motorists. Sometimes a small number of people try to drive up to the entrance of the conference, just to ask directions to the clearly signposted carparks! It takes quite a bit of driving to successfully negotiate the concrete barriers specially erected for the conference, but there are the few that succeed.

One area where this has caused problems is in abortion. The perpetual morality debate aside, abortion has been held to contravene the right to life provision in certain European countries. Although there is still great scope for challenge, this could potentially cause problems in the coming years as more and more cases of this nature are brought before the European court. Another major problem area is that of same sex marriages. The universal right to marry means that any provision stopping same sex marriage anywhere in Europe could potentially be struck down as illegal, requiring nations to actively realign their current provisions to avoid any discrimination.For this reason, the UK, amongst others, have taken proactive measures to permit same-sex marriages to avoid the embarrassment of a public ruling against them.This obviously raises problems of national power and freedom: nations are now utterly bound by the principles of European 'liberty', whether they like it or not.
